(Medicago sativa)

A perennial cool-season legume that is suitable for hay, haylage, silage, or pasture. Plants feature an erect growth habit from a single crown and a long taproot, which allows excellent performance under drought conditions. Grazing types feature a lower crown height and, as a result, are less likely to be damaged by livestock. Alfalfa comes in a wide range of dormancies and disease packages, so care should be used in selecting the proper variety. Alfalfa may cause bloat, but with proper application and management, the chances of this can be greatly reduced.
